Contactor Reactor Maintenance Schedule PDF Print E-mail
The following table contains most of the maintenance information regarding the STRATCO Contactor™ reactor  which is need to be done at regular basis.

Component
Location
Inspection Frequency Estimated Life Remarks
Internal Grid

Lower circulation tube, above impeller 3 months

5 – 20 yrs

(Access through top manway.) Ensure nuts on J-bolt clips are tight/secure.  Inspect welds securing mounting clips to circulation tube jacket.
Manway flat gasket

Top head

Each use

Varies

Leakage normally evident through steam discharge during operation.  Ensure gasket intact.

TubeTurn Manway ring gasket Top head

Each use

Varies

Leakage normally evident through steam discharge during operation.  Ensure gasket intact.

Anti-vortex Plates

Lower circulation tube, above impeller

Annually

20 – 40 yrs

(Access through top manway and from below with hydraulic head removed.)  Inspect welds, plate-to-plate and plate-to-circulation tube.  Check thickness and surface condition.
Lower Vanes

Lower circulation tube, between circulation tube and shell Annually

20 – 40 yrs

(Access from below with hydraulic head removed.)  Inspect welds, plate-to-shell and plate-to-circulation tube.  Check thickness and surface condition.
 Impeller cap

Hyd. Head assembly, above impeller Annually

5 – 20 yrs

(Access inside hydraulic head with hydraulic head removed.)  Check surface smoothness; grind to smooth out channels as required.
Impeller

Hyd. Head assembly

Annually

2 – 10 yrs

(Access inside hydraulic head with hydraulic head removed.)  Check surface smoothness.  Minor channeling may be ground smooth for extended life only if dynamically and statically rebalanced.
Impeller Shaft

Hyd. Head assembly

Annually

20 – 40 yrs

(Access with hydraulic head removed.)  Check runout above sleeve bearing with impeller removed and motor coupled.  Check clearance in bearing.  Remove shaft to inspect surface at sleeve bearing, mechanical seal and rigid coupling and locknut threads.
Sleeve bearing

Head casting, below impeller

Annually

 2 – 10 yrs

(Access with hydraulic head disassembled.)  Check clearance with impeller shaft.  Check surface smoothness.
Head casting

Hyd. Head assembly

Annually

20 – 40 yrs

(Access with hydraulic head removed.)  Check surface smoothness; pitting should be ground smooth for extended life.  Check vane thickness; vanes should be overwelded and ground smooth if thinning is excessive.  Check “nib” at bottom of gasket groove; nib can be overwelded and remachined for extended life.
Mecahnical Seal (John Crane Type 9)

Hyd. Head assembly, inside seal chamber

As required

1 – 2 yrs

(Access with motor uncoupled and seal chamber cover removed.)  Inspection and replacement required when leakage is detected.  Replacement recommended whenever seal is removed.
Mechanical Seal (Cartridge type)

Hyd. Head assembly, below seal chamber

As required

 3 – 6 yrs

(Access with motor uncoupled and motor slightly lowered.)  Inspection and replacement required when leakage is detected.  Seal can be reused if removed with setting tabs in place.
Rigid Coupling

Hyd. Head assembly, between impeller and motor shaft Annually

20 – 40 yrs

Check runout of impeller shaft above coupling.  After removal of coupling, check condition of bore.

Slinger ring o-ring

Hyd. Head assembly, on motor shaft below coupling Annually

2 – 10 yrs

(Access with motor uncoupled.)  Check condition of o-ring and indication of leakage past o-ring on motor shaft.
Motor

Hyd. Head assembly

Annually

20 – 40 yrs

Check shaft runout; motor bearing require periodic replacement.  Check drain opening at upper flange.  Inspect interior for presence of excessive amounts of grease.
Lubricator

Near Hyd. Head assembly

Daily

20 – 40 yrs

Check reservoir level.  Ensure proper flow of lubricant to seal chamber.  Ensure seal chamber is filled prior to energizing impeller motor.  Verify check valve integrity.
Head gasket

At the flange where the hydraulic head attaches to the shell  When disassembled

1 to 3 uses

This would require replacement any time the two components are separated for the purpose of service or inspection.

Manway gaskets

On the manway located on the top head of the shell  At each use

1 month (flat gasket) 1 year (o-ring gasket)

Life span varies depending on the type of gasket, but is typically replaced any time there is evidence of leak of vapor during operation.
